FAQs
About First Light
First Light USA is a nonprofit organization providing long-term, non-clinical stability and reintegration support for women after domestic and sexual violence. Through First Light Circles, education, practical tools, accountability, and peer connection, First Light helps women understand patterns, practice healthier responses, and rebuild forward after immediate crisis.
No. First Light is non-clinical and does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions. First Light Circles are designed to complement therapy and other professional support, not replace them.
No. First Light does not provide emergency intervention, crisis counseling, shelter, or case management. If you are in immediate danger or need urgent crisis support, use Crisis & Immediate Help instead of waiting for First Light to respond.
Victim services, crisis organizations, and therapists can provide essential safety, advocacy, clinical care, and healing. First Light focuses on the period after immediate crisis, when a woman may still need structured support for applying what she knows to everyday relationships, boundaries, choices, coping, and self-trust.
First Light Circles
Circles are designed for women impacted by domestic or sexual violence who are beyond immediate crisis and ready for structured, non-clinical support. A participant may be in therapy, have completed therapy, lack access to therapy, or simply want more structure for applying insight to everyday life.
No. First Light does not require therapy as a universal condition of participation. First Light may work alongside therapy when a participant is receiving it, but the Circle itself is not therapy.
Circles combine facilitated education, guided reflection, practical exercises, accountability, and peer connection. The focus is on understanding patterns, practicing healthier skills, and carrying those skills into real life.
The current First Light Circles program is structured around a clear progression. Women begin with a free Welcome Gathering before deciding whether to continue into the full program.
Circles are designed as small, consistent groups. First Light does not publish a fixed participant count because capacity may vary by cohort.
First Light Circles are offered at no cost to participants. Donors, sponsors, and community partners help make that possible.
First Light itself does not provide therapy. Partner-supported benefits may include access to individual therapy sessions through licensed clinicians in First Light's referral network. Any clinical care is delivered by the clinical partner and remains separate from the non-clinical Circle program.
Joining Or Getting Support
Yes. Women can apply directly through Get Support or the Self-Apply Form. You do not need a professional referral to express interest.
After you submit the Self-Apply Form, First Light follows up directly. If the program appears to be a fit, the next step is a free Welcome Gathering where you can experience the program and decide whether you want to continue. If another kind of support is more appropriate, First Light aims to make that next step clearer whenever possible.
No. We ask only for the information needed to understand fit, follow up, and support an appropriate next step. You do not need to provide unnecessary traumatic detail simply to ask for help.
Do not wait for First Light. Visit Crisis & Immediate Help for 911, Victim Service Center of Central Florida, RAINN, the National Domestic Violence Hotline, 988, and other urgent support options.
Donations & Partnership
Donations help support First Light Circles, educational materials, participant and community experiences, referral and community partnerships, organizational capacity, and the development of future access such as Nationwide Modules. How funds are used depends on current program and organizational needs.
First Light USA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. If a donor receives goods or services in connection with a contribution, the deductible amount may differ.
Nationwide Modules are in development. They are part of First Light's long-term plan to expand access beyond the communities it can currently reach in person.

Referrals
Yes. First Light has a professional referral pathway for appropriate referrals made with the participant's knowledge. Referrers explain that First Light is voluntary, non-clinical, and intended for support after immediate crisis.
Yes, when she otherwise appears appropriate for First Light. Participation must remain voluntary. First Light is not a mandated treatment program or a condition of supervision.
A referral does not automatically authorize First Light to share participation details, Circle discussions, or other personal information. Any information shared back to a referrer must respect participant permission and applicable law.
Privacy
We take privacy seriously and explain how personal information is handled. Because Circles include peers, and because legal obligations or exceptions may apply in some situations, First Light does not promise absolute confidentiality. Participants receive clear privacy expectations before sharing sensitive information.
