Support for carrying insight into everyday life

First Light offers non-clinical support alongside therapy, victim services, and other professional care. It gives women a place to practice what they are learning in relationships, routines, boundaries, decisions, and everyday life.

What First Light Adds

Education

Evidence-informed language for recognizing patterns and survival responses.

Integration

Structured opportunities to practice practical skills in real-life contexts.

Accountability

Consistent encouragement to move from insight toward healthier choices and forward action.

Peer Connection

A facilitated community that reduces isolation and gives women a place to practice healthier connection.

Referral & Coordination

Inform the participant that First Light is a voluntary, non-clinical resource and obtain her knowledge before referring. First Light contacts the participant directly to determine fit and next steps.

Refer a Participant

A referral does not provide automatic access to enrollment, attendance, or Circle discussions. Any information shared back to a provider is limited to what the participant has authorized and what applicable law permits.

A Complementary Role

First Light is not group therapy or clinical treatment. We do not diagnose or manage mental health conditions, and a First Light Circle does not replace a participant's relationship with a therapist, advocate, victim-service provider, or other professional support.

First Light gives women a consistent place to practice what they are learning outside a clinical setting. That can be useful whether a woman is currently in therapy, has completed therapy, cannot access it, or simply wants more support applying insight in daily life.

When First Light May Be A Good Fit

A referral may be appropriate when a woman:

  • Has been impacted by domestic or sexual violence.
  • Is beyond immediate crisis and not seeking emergency intervention through First Light.
  • Is functioning but still feels stuck, isolated, uncertain, or caught in repeated patterns.
  • Wants practical support with boundaries, relationships, self-trust, coping, emotional regulation, or decision-making.
  • Understands that First Light is non-clinical.
  • Is participating voluntarily.

When Another Resource Should Come First

First Light is not designed to manage active crisis, immediate danger, emergency needs, acute clinical instability, or needs requiring ongoing case management. Use Crisis & Immediate Help or the participant's existing professional support system when those needs are primary.
